About "Pension Day 1"
I am deeply moved by the plight of poor elderly people in rural South Africa. This lady and her husband of whom the next painting is, always dress up smartly and spend their pension day sitting in the sun in the village. It is their once monthly outing. The money they receive is less than 100 dollar, and they have no other means of earning as they have been broken by the hard labour they did all their lives.
I find that faces and bodies speak a language of their own - often different from the intended message of the speaker. This is what fascinates me about the people I try to capture, and the modern world as a whole. A quite common inability to express, or read, subtle emotional messages. All the talk is about sharing emotions, but so often the body tells the careful observer that the expressed emotion is false.
