Few things captivate me so intensely than the interaction between light and shadow - the deeper and more dramatic the shadows, the more beautiful I find the interaction and functionality of the light with the objects in the scene. Seeing how the light behaves, dances and bounces off objects in its path to then softly fade away into the distance whilst creating rich shadow shapes is truly fascinating.
Our modern world has lost much of its beauty and grace. It now echoes something else. I believe that there is no light without the shadows, no colour without the grays and no new beginnings without our old memories. Forgotten things and fraying beauty still echo through our everyday existence, only to be noticed by those who still believe that it has a place in our new world. Through shadow and light my paintings tell the story of objects and ideas that once formed part of a forgotten world where beauty used to reign.
My parents’ love for farming, gardening and nature was handed to me when I was still a young child and it has played a significant role in my love for nature science and art, especially in landscape and still life painting which are the two genres closest to my heart. I enjoy old farm scenes that depict the solitude of the land and floral works and still lifes that capture the beauty of ordinary and often forgotten objects from our daily lives. The quiet dignity of flowers and plants captivates me and with their fragile and fleeting beauty they keep reminding me how precious time is.
