About "Silent Watcher"
Silent Watcher captures the fleeting moment when observation becomes recognition: a quiet encounter between two living beings.
Inspired by the foxes I encounter while living within the nature reserve of Radio Kootwijk in the Netherlands, the painting explores that brief moment when a wild animal pauses and appears to return the viewer's gaze. There is no drama or movement, only alertness, stillness and presence.
Painted in layered oil using traditional glazing techniques, the close composition brings the viewer directly into the fox's gaze. Warm natural light reveals subtle variations in the fur, while the amber eyes hold the intelligence and watchfulness of the animal.
Rather than simply portraying a fox, the painting explores the silent connection that can occur between human and animal when observation becomes mutual awareness.
Silent Watcher forms part of my continuing exploration of Solar Realism, where natural light becomes more than illumination. It reveals character, atmosphere and the quiet presence contained within the subject.

About Leone
Leone Tonkinson is a South African-born fine artist based in the Netherlands and founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach centred on the presence and character of natural light.
Working primarily in oils, she combines traditional layered painting techniques with close observation, creating still lifes, wildlife and botanical works marked by luminosity, quiet presence and finely observed detail.
Her South African roots and her life within the Dutch landscape both inform her work, bringing together warmth, nature and a strong sense of place. Rather than simply depicting a subject, Tonkinson seeks the moment when light, atmosphere and presence give it emotional resonance.
Her work is held in private collections and exhibited in the Netherlands and internationally.
