About "That's Life"

I have painted this scene previously in acrylic several years ago. The loneliness, despair and hopelessness reflected in her body posture never fails to grab me. The early work was titled 'What Future?' as I imagined her feelings of being trapped in the shack surrounded by the symbols of that bondage of poverty. This work done as part of my solo exhibition in Dec. 2010 in oils this time, I entitled 'Thats Life' - perhaps having reached the stage of acceptance that we need to do if we are to cope with our varied situations in life. I am pleased that both these artworks have been sold which to me is encouragment that they do 'speak' or have something to say.

About Alyson

Alyson Guy

I appreciate all facets of life, the beauty of creation in all its diversity- so paint people (expressive faces & those that tell a story) flowers, landscapes, cats are a particular love also. Enjoy colour & texture, so oils is preferred medium though have worked in acrylic & watercolor, as well as sculpture in clay. Have been commissioned to do murals, landscapes again with the feeling of traveling into the picture. Often have a spiritual message in the subject matter and have written short notes as I have meditated on the artwork afterward. Being creative is very therapeutic for me and I know others that it has helped to be set 'free', so believe in the means of expressing one's inner self.

Exhibitions

December 2000 -1st Solo, then each year thereafter joint exhibitions at Hermanus Art Society, Vermont Art Circle and with Group of 12 Women artists (Book Club) The latter ones generally with a theme & in 2008 exhibited "Miniatures". Have participated in various exhibitions in & around Hermanus & Somerset West over the years.Completed commissions for Dept of Tourism, Western Cape.. My 2nd solo exhibition was held at Bellini Gallery, Main Road, Hermanus with the theme "People & Places" My main emphasis was to paint portraits of the people with whom I worked daily plus friends in the community on Volmoed where I live & work. I was able to bless the staff by giving them their portraits as a Christmas gift - the joy & laughter that brought was very special. The official opening on 3 December was well attended & great fun with several sales also.
As a country member of South African Society of Artists I have participated in numerous exhibitions and Art in the Park opportunities. My 3rd Solo was held at The Mission's House Gallery, de Villiers Street, Onrus, called 'TREES'. A series of trees painted from various place I visited over the past 18 months, with some experiments in technique & other media. As part of a group of five, we held an exhibition with the theme "Connections" at Mission's House gallery, Onrus. During the Annual Hermanus FynArts Festival, I have led several workshops & held art exhibitions of works produced by the pupils who attend my Art classes. A commission during 2015, was to paint an 8 metre canvas with one of the Stations of the Cross to be erected with the other 13, in the Human Rights Centre/Palestine Museum in Cape Town. After an interesting and enlightening trip to Palestine in June, I elected to paint "Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem". It has already been on display at a conference in Johannesburg and hopefully the completion of the building & official unveiling of all will take place in next few months.
I continue to have others join me in the Artroom here for advice, guidance, demos & general instruction.
As a member of WCAS (Western Cape Art Society)& IWSSA (International watercolor Society SA)I have also participated in various exhibitions & competitions.Recently awarded a Highly Commended Certificate for my piece "Joy of Life"
