About Josef

Josef Gocke

In the quiet village nestled in the southern part of Germany, Josef Gocke was born under the watchful gaze of the Black Forest. As the youngest of nine, his childhood was a mosaic of vibrant scenes and quiet moments, each one painted in the colors of his father's imagination. At twelve, Josef picked up his first brush, with each stroke, he began to speak his own artistic language, blending his father's influence with his own emerging voice. When Josef turned twenty, the world seemed to open up in ways he hadn't anticipated. The war had cast long shadows over Europe, but within those shadows, Josef found a glimmer of light in the form of commissions. The call of duty led him to the German Army for two years, where the noise of battle and the weight of uniform stood in stark contrast to the serene landscapes he so loved to paint. Yet, even in the chaos, he found moments of clarity, capturing the fleeting beauty of the world around him on scraps of paper whenever he could.

After his service, Josef's journey took him to Reutlingen, where he immersed himself in the world of textiles. Graduating as a Weaving Master was a testament to his versatility, but the artistic soul within him remained restless. The threads of fabric, like the strokes of paint, became another medium through which he expressed his vision.

In 1971, a new chapter began as Josef immigrated to South Africa. The transition was both challenging and exhilarating. The landscapes of South Africa offered a fresh canvas, a different kind of muse. The seas he had once seen from a distance now became his daily view, their vastness and rhythm inspiring a new series of paintings. The vibrant colors of the South African sun and the unique textures of its land infused his work with a new energy.
