About Sheila

Sheila Louw

Sheila Penelope Louw was born in London, England, where she studied at St. Martins School of Art before moving to South Africa permanently. Whilst pursuing a career as a Geological Draughtswoman, she had an on/off relationship with her artwork, as she found the precision of draughting too restricting to give her the freedom she needed to express herself in her paintings.
Her frustration was finally solved by using those skills to paint what is now one of her absolute passions - Golf Courses.
The challenge of painting them with absolute accuracy was the perfect answer, combining the precision of draughting with the freedom of the brush.
Whenever possible, she goes to the courses herself, or, as in the case of Overseas commissions, she paints from photographs.
Sheila works in oils, acrylics or watercolours and paints a wide range of subjects and when she needs to break away from the concentration needed for for the finer work, she then produces her abstract work by either working with a palette knife or pouring paint onto her canvas. Her abstract work is signed Penelope.
Sheila enjoys adventuring through all subjects and mediums and paints a wide range of subject matter her inspiration often coming from simple things like the play of light or a piece of material. She has had many exhibitions and has sold her work both locally and Overseas to private collectors and galleries and has her studio/gallery in George in the beautiful Western Cape in South Africa.
