About Sandra
I live and work in the village of Bathurst and have painted since the age of seven. I studied under renowned South African artist Jack Lugg who trained with Walter Battiss, one of the leading artists of the twenty-first century.
I draw much of my inspiration from the Albany Thickets, an ecoregion of dense spiny scrubland and low forest concentrated in the Eastern Cape. It is a wild, uninhabited place that offers me endless opportunities for exploration.
I use several mediums, allowing for greater experimentation and exploration. I work from my own photographs and on-site sketches. Embracing the subject, I investigate and reinterpret the images in a way that is different from the traditional portrayal of a purely realistic rendition of the subject. My work consists of many small focal details instead of one obvious single view. In doing this, I can play with the positive and negative impressions of nature.
I am in search of the untouched and find untamed landscapes captivating. I don't deliberately look for subject material but rather journal my travels to out-of-reach locations.
"I like places where no one else goes and I try to portray the quietness there. I want people who cannot reach the uninhabited places that I do, to explore them through my art."
I also draws inspiration from her lush garden. My artworks feature shadows and reflections, trees, ponds, aloes, flowers and rocks drawn in fine detail, imbuing the pieces with an ethereal quality.
"There is a sense of tranquility and mystery in Sandra's drawings and paintings." Marion Whitehead - Country Life April 2020
