About "Black Widow"

The poem 'The Spider and the Fly" by Mary Howitt published in 1828 has many analogies to modern life.
The first line of the poem reads 'Will you walk into my parlour?' said the Spider to the Fly." The poem goes on to relate how a cunning spider ensnares a naive fly through seduction and flattery.
The poem is a cautionary tale against those who use flattery and charm to disguise their less than honest intentions.

In the painting the black widow ensnares her man through seduction and guile. The willing male, led by his urges, happily indulges but is not as willing to pay the price.
