About Isabelle
Biography
I was born in South Africa, in a little town called Middelburg, and brought up in Johannesburg. I did a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts (1987) at the University of Stellenbosch, and have since been teaching art while raising a family.. I now live in Cape Town with my husband and our two exquisite sons, and have recently started painting full time.
Artist's statement
I work intuitively, drawing from what surfaces in my subconscious, dream world and daily experience. I see art-making as sacred and try to empty myself to allow spirit to speak through me, always being guided by truth and light. I try to stay open and flow with whatever surfaces in the moment. Nature has a huge and steady presence in my art-making and I spend as much time outdoors as I can: walking, cycling, swimming and paddling in the magnificent mountains, forests, rivers and seas of the Cape Peninsula and surrounds. Nature provides me with endless nourishment and inspiration and I feel deeply grateful for the endless capacity it has to bring healing and peace. Through my art I try to reflect its stillness, richness and beauty. It is a journey of endless discovery, both within and without. My aim is to uplift, illuminate and deepen reflection, contemplation and integration through art. It is a wondrous tool and gift.
'From wonder into wonder existence opens' Lao Tzu
I work in a variety of mediums, including oils, which is my favourite medium, but also watercolours, charcoal, pastels, pencil and printmaking.
