About Johan Smith Art Gallery
Since opening its doors to the public in November 1999, the Johan Smith Art Gallery has become synonymous with the beautiful village of Clarens, in the Eastern Free State. The town is 2.5 hours drive from Johannesburg. Visitors can the enjoy the splendour of the beautiful Maluti mountains while browsing through numerous galleries, shops or enjoy a meal in one of the local restaurants or pubs. The gallery is part of the Windmill Centre, which is housed in rustic sandstone buildings, typical of the architecture of the Free State platteland. On entering the gallery passion for art, in all its forms, is revealed, each item handpicked and shown with pride. We house the following art: glass, bronze, prints, original works, ceramics and other works of art as well.
