About "Hillside Shacks (A3)"

When one hears of architecture and photography, they tend to think photographs of pristine neighbourhoods or towering, mighty buildings so that viewers can indulge in the sight and fantasise about being in said building(s). These photographs tend to showcase the good wealth and prosperity of a property, community, ideal or economy.

This photo series was an attempt to subvert it, by photographing the subject that people rarely want to see. Despite claims of booming economies and sights of tall business towers, settlements like these appear and continue to grow, as more and more people are pushed into poverty. As one can see, the settlements are located close to the Canola farm fields, with Canola being a booming commodity. Behind the field is the natural mountain that these hills were once part of. The natural world gets removed and replaced with farm fields that grow commodities and helps grow the economy. The settlement represents the very people benefitting from this economic growth. It makes on wonder who the workers are growing the economy for. One should also be aware that these shacks are still homes to human beings, who work day and night to provide for their families... just like everyone else. Though at the end of the day, some people go home to bigger, warmer houses, or in some cases, private villas.

To emphasise the theme of the growing economic divide, in 2024 the green space in the photograph that separated the settlement from the farm field is now part of the settlement.

About Niels

Niels Bastiaensen was born in 1995 in Suriname in America, but moved to Africa at an early age. Throughout his life, he has travelled all over Africa, falling in love with its people and their cultures, with its nature and its animals. He graduated in 2020 from Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography in photography and multimedia and is currently doing his BA Honours in Visual Studies at Stellenbosch university. He also spends a lot of time on the family farm in Napier, South Africa, where he continues to work on his photography and web design.

The main focus of Niels Bastiaensen's photography is to capture the beauty of nature. From the obscure, untouched corner of a farm field, to the raw and untamed African wilderness. He sees and captures the beauty of the silent, still and peaceful, the interwoven lives of animals, great and small, and the complex relationship between nature and the ever growing human world. His other subjects include land art, light painting, architectural and cultural photography.
