About "Hope"

I chose to paint this piece in an abstract manner because I think as humans we think very abstract. My choice of colours symbolizes a feeling of hope in an environment of uncertainty. The dark, almost reddish orange in the foreground gives the feeling of uncertainty and even possible despair and this is further highlighted by my harsher brush strokes. The lighter orange and yellow colour in the middle ground leads the mind to think that positive change can come about.
The very light yellow and almost disguised tree in the background further gives encouragement that there is some hope that can hold positive possibilities. The tree symbolizes growth and the renewal of lost faith. The tree is bare and this suggests that growth and change is still about to happen if we want it to and the only way for it to bare leaves is to water it with positive and encouraging thoughts. My painting does not attempt to make reference to the political situation in our country but instead attempts to illustrate the mental and emotional state of society as a whole towards all challenges and situations that occur in our daily lives. I want this piece to encourage society to become more optimistic and less pessimistic about everyday challenges and to believe that there is always hope even when things seems hopeless.

About Guillaume

Guillaume Ah Shene

I was born and still live in Port Elizabeth and had a passion for art since I was about 4 years old. I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I've been absent from the art scene for a number of years but started painting again in 2008. I am inspired by people and nature. I love colour and the effect that light has on objects and people. I believe that as an artist one must use one's talent to make a positive contribution to society in any way possible, be it by being involved in charity events or by making people aware of what is happening around them. I am a realist that try to capture the impression or feeling the subject matter gives me. I have however recently started doing more abstract work which many years ago I saw as a challenge but now, I find it easier and I enjoy how it makes it so much easier to express myself.
I have experience working in the following mediums: Oils, acrylics, pencil, pen and ink, chalk and oil pastel, lino cuts, batik, silkscreening and charcoal. I have done a few commissions ranging from pencil portraits, to oil on canvas works, to large murals. I also design logos and posters and have recently designed a sticker for the international wetlands week for Birdlife Eastern Cape.
