About "Shipwreck"

Shipwreck emerged from my deep connection to the coastline, where the sea always feels both beautiful and merciless. I was moved by the idea of shipwrecks as thresholds--moments when lives were forever altered, when survival meant stepping into an unknown world. Standing on a misty shore, I imagined the sailors who once looked back at the ocean, realizing there was no return. That sense of irreversible change resonated with me personally, as I reflected on times when life demanded surrender to the unfamiliar. Painting this piece, I felt the raw force of nature pressing against human fragility. The heavy textures became a way of embodying the surf, the rocks, the relentless erosion of time. To me, Shipwreck is about vulnerability and resilience, about the haunting beauty of endings that also mark beginnings. It is a quiet monument to loss, but also to survival.

About Adri

My work explores landscape as a place of memory rather than description. I am not painting locations as they appear, but as they feel once time, distance, and emotion have softened their edges.
Working primarily in oil, I build surfaces through layering, scraping, and subtle glazing. These processes allow forms to emerge slowly -- horizons dissolve, structures fade, water becomes atmosphere. I am interested in the quiet space between presence and absence, where land, water, and built forms feel suspended rather than fixed.
The landscapes I return to -- open terrain, waterlines, distant settlements -- are pared back to their essential relationships of tone, mass, and light. By reducing detail, I create space for stillness and reflection. The work is intentionally restrained; gesture is controlled, colour muted, and composition simplified to hold a sense of emotional distance. This distance is not coldness, but a contemplative pause -- a moment where the viewer can enter without being directed.
Surfaces play an important role. Marks are partially erased, textures buried under thin veils of paint, suggesting traces of history or memory beneath what is visible. The paintings exist in a state of becoming and dissolving at the same time.
Ultimately, my work is about quiet -- about the subtle tension between solidity and disappearance, and the way landscape can hold both solitude and presence in the same breath.
