About Adri
My work explores landscape as a place of memory rather than description. I am not painting locations as they appear, but as they feel once time, distance, and emotion have softened their edges.
Working primarily in oil, I build surfaces through layering, scraping, and subtle glazing. These processes allow forms to emerge slowly -- horizons dissolve, structures fade, water becomes atmosphere. I am interested in the quiet space between presence and absence, where land, water, and built forms feel suspended rather than fixed.
The landscapes I return to -- open terrain, waterlines, distant settlements -- are pared back to their essential relationships of tone, mass, and light. By reducing detail, I create space for stillness and reflection. The work is intentionally restrained; gesture is controlled, colour muted, and composition simplified to hold a sense of emotional distance. This distance is not coldness, but a contemplative pause -- a moment where the viewer can enter without being directed.
Surfaces play an important role. Marks are partially erased, textures buried under thin veils of paint, suggesting traces of history or memory beneath what is visible. The paintings exist in a state of becoming and dissolving at the same time.
Ultimately, my work is about quiet -- about the subtle tension between solidity and disappearance, and the way landscape can hold both solitude and presence in the same breath.
