Maretha's daughter was diagnosed with bi-polar depression in 2003. Her condition rapidly deteriorated into serious psychoses. Maretha had to care for her like a baby. After ten months' hospitalization she was sufficiently stabilized for discharge.
Thus the 2004 exhibition's symbolic theme: LABYRINTH. A maze bewilders, confuses, invariably leads to destruction. A labyrinth directs, supports and eventually leads to triumph.

New Light on Life's Pathway ===========================
As life touches us in loss and rebirth. An artist finds solitude in new works, fresh starts. After a long period of stillness, Maretha,(previously Burger)decided to embark on her 12th solo exhibition, Life Lines; this December, 3rd and 4th at her studio gallery.
The artist has taken inspiration from her life path, loss of the father of her children to cancer, finding love again in a new marriage with the loving support and understanding of her husband, Eugene Champion. The artist finds inspiration where least expected. She says her handicapped daughter, Beatrice (aged 24) is her great LIGHT OF LOVE that grounds her.
It has been a long sabbatical. It has been a long wait. We are excited to have Maretha's works under our gaze of appreciation again.
