About Herbert
(1921-2008)Herbert Coetzee worked within the popular Cape tradition of derivative impressionism. His paintings are descriptively rendered with loose brushwork and a colourful palette. He was interested in technical effects and experimented with varying methods of portraying his subjects. He was appointed Lecturer in Fine Art School in 1968. He completed commissioned murals at Wellington Training College, Wynberg Military Camp and for Safmarine vessels - 'SA Hex River" and 'SA Alphen'. He studied under Maurice van Essche 1959-60: awarded a Belgian bursary to study at Opsomer, Antwerp.
