About Antoinette

Antoinette Ohlenschlger grew up in Pretoria, Gauteng. She studied Art and Design at the Pretoria Technikon Art School and was nominated student of the year in her third and final year. She worked as a professional graphic designer until 2000, when she decided to devote her time and love to what she adored most doing, painting and drawing. She is also a sculptor, goldsmith & jewellery designer.
Antoinette works in oil. Her art is characterized by its versatility themes are taken from landscapes, wildlife, skulls, seascapes, still life, portraits, nude studies, etc. and vibrant, bold colours. A special love of hers is the sea - painting fishermen, fishing boats and trawlers, and the activity of harbours. She also enjoy doing Surrealistic art / paintings, drawings and she has done numerous murals over the years. Antoinette is a keen skull /bone collector and likes to incorporate them into her art and sculptures. She models her sculptures in clay and mixed media, makes her own molds and does her own cold-metal and resin casting. Whenever time allows, one would find her at the Hermanus and nearby Gansbaai harbours, or on Struisbaai beach, camera in hand. Photography, being a great love and interest of hers.

In her landscapes, one would become aware of her very fine observation of the land and all its beauty, colour and splendour. She manages to bring to life the vast expanse of an Overberg farm scene with its wheat fields, workers' cottages and the ever present windmill, the ochre colours of Free State maize or the empty desolation of the Little Karoo veld set against blue mountains in the distance.
Her work is loved, adored and sought after by many, perhaps because of its honesty and simplicity, its vibrancy, and perhaps because her total devotion to what she does, is evident in every stroke of the brush. She is very passionate about her art and believe that if you enjoy what you do, you'll be good at it. Small wonder that she has work held in private collections locally and all over the world. This has become true very literally recently, since she was commissioned to supply seven Safmarine vessels which sail the oceans of the world, with a number (90+) of oil paintings on different subjects each. (The first batch of these oils were assigned to the brand new Safmarine Ngami (photo) under command of Captain Louise Angel, the first South African woman to captain a container vessel.)

Amongst the many commissions Antoinette painted over the years, she also received a commission for 36 oil painting of Hermanus for a Advertising company in Cape Town, as a gift to their international clients. The paintings were also printed on T-shirts and other promotional gear.
Antoinette also exhibits her art throughout South Africa at numerous Arts Festival, such as KKnK Arts Festival, Aardklop Arts Festival, Innibos Arts Festival, National Arts Festival - Grahamstown, Gariep Arts Festival, Kalfiefees - Onrus/Hermanus, Hermanus FynArts and the Hermanus Whale Festival.
She was also a finalist at the 2014 Hermanus FynArts with her sculpture, 'The Finger print of God'. (The theme being a 'Tondo' - 'Origins'). The exhibition was held at Bouchard Finlayson Winery in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus. She was also interviewed by a Turkish Television crew for a International Life Style & Decor Television programme, explaining her sculpture 'The Finger print of God' - based on Sacred Geometry and in particular the Spiral.
During the 2014 Kalfiefees Art Exhibition in Hermanus, Antoinette was interviewed by KykNET for their Fista programme on Arts Festivals, and in particular the platform created by the Arts Festivals for artists to promote there work.
Antoinette lives and works in Onrus River, close to beautiful Hermanus in the Western Cape. Her work can be viewed at her studio / gallery at any time.
