Born on the farm Hillmoor near Steynsburg in the Great Karoo,Pieter Robert Uitlander is a self taught artist. Mentored by his father Robert Lansing Southey who was an artist, he grew up in his fathers studio and there he developed his love for painting at the age of six years.

As he grew older he became influenced by Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Pissaro. He embarked on a full-time career as an artist in 1997, a painter of thirty six years standing he has taken part in thirty exhibitions and has an established collectorship in South Africa and abroad.
