About "The Five Sisters"

The extreme isolation of Kubu Island, in the Makgadikgadi salt pans in Botswana, stand in sharp contrast with the unspoiled beauty of the place. This scene depicts a sunset on the island which is known for its magnificent Baobabs that has a red tint to it at sunset. The Makgadikgadi pans is considered as the largest salt pans in the world and measures 150km X 70km. In Setswana folklore Baobab trees are always referred to as females.
The work has been done by palette knife only. I hope this conveys the rugged beauty of the scene.

About Anton

Anton Matthee

Antons painting interest started at school but sports, woman and cars got the best of him. One of his paintings at school won an International Award in Australia. He revisited his painting passion again from 2006 onwards, is self taught and does not specialise in a specific style. His paintings is a reflection of what he experience when encountering different views of life and he only paints what he has experienced. Painting has become more than a hobby and now boarders on an obsession. Maybe this is his way of catching up on lost time[0x1][0x1]or trying to tell his story through pictures rather than words.

Hobbies include photography, writing short stories, painting and doing extreme Overland trips. He was the chief organiser of the Overland Challenge 2005 that took ten teams from Beira in Mozambique to Swakopmund in Namibia via Malawi, Zambia and Botswana. He regularly Overland to remote places in Southern Africa such as the Origin of the Zambezi, Moremi, Chobe, Savuti, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Namibia. Hopes are high to explore the DRC shortly.

Anton grew up in Port Elizabeth where he finished his school career. He joined the then Post Office as a Technician and completed his National Diploma Cum Laude in Telecommunication Engineering. Studied B-Eng (Electronic Engineering) at Stellenbosch University and then did his MBA at Stellenbosch Business School.

Anton specialise in Telecommunication Consultation and Project Management and have worked in many African, Middle Eastern countries. He is married with two daughters and three dogs and stays in Stellenbosch.
