About "The Urban King"

This is Shaba; he was born in the time of segregation, apartheid, which meant that even though he was an intelligent young boy, he never had the opportunity to have a proper education. Apartheid was like a game of chess between black and white; there were kings and queens (the privileged) and then there were the peons (those who struggle and make sacrifices).
Shaba had to start working at a young age to help support his family. Since he was a small boy he had a fascination with the game of chess, he believed that it developed his intellectual properties and that it sharpened his mind. Shaba taught his daughter how to play chess; she is a clever young girl and a quick learner.
Today Shaba works more than one job in the city and sends most of his money home so that his daughter can go to school and have a bright future. Shaba keeps the king chess piece as a reminder of his daughter back home and that she is the reason why he works so hard. Shaba gave his daughter the queen chess piece, as the queen is the most important and precious piece in the game.
