About "X Marks the Spot"

Walking in nature I often find similar patterns or marks in the rock formations. The x mark is prolific and I've started working with the idea of a treasure map where x marks the spot is where treasure has been or can be found. There is gold left in the area but instead of actual gold, perhaps an insight or a simple enjoyment of the walk is treasure enough.

About Petru

Petru Viljoen

I use a range of artistic media in my artworks. I paint for the sake of painting and express colour and mark through the medium of photorealism. The collages or mixed media works are experimentations in expression of how things got to be as they are. Colour photos have atmosphere and black and white photography has a beauty of its own. There are meditative qualities in the tonal value as well as in the subject matter. The plant studies accent a delicate, transient state of being. Due consideration is requested of what it is and in the abstractions of what it is not, or what it became. The photos are printed on canson (drawing paper) for texture. They are available in editions of 25.
The rock studies, by its nature more permanent in structure, are equally evocative in the atmosphere of the abstractions.
I've moved to the countryside from Johannesburg and, though primarily a painter, I've started taking photographs of the environment to contemplate, explore and absorb the very different place I find myself in. I'm also new to gardening, hence the plant studies. This has developed into an independent means of artistic expression, and I am now ready to put some of the work out there. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I decided to include two small paintings I made of the rock formations in my area. I experimented with acrylic on paper. Although the paintings are realistic, I would like to believe that the colour and intensity of mark lends an expressionist atmosphere to them. Some of my work has made it to Germany, England, France, United States and Australia and is included in private and corporate collections in Johannesburg.
