About "07 Legacy in Porcelain"
This work explores the idea of cultural layering -- how objects carry history, and how that history shifts across place and time.
At the center is a Delft tulip vase, a form deeply rooted in Dutch tradition. In this piece, the vase is subtly altered, introducing an African element in the handle, creating a quiet dialogue between origins. The tulips -- specifically parrot tulips -- extend this tension through their expressive, almost sculptural presence.
Beneath the arrangement lies a fragment of newspaper, referencing the architectural form of Gebouw A in Radio Kootwijk. This element anchors the work in a specific place, while also suggesting the passing of time and the layering of memory.
The composition brings together European still life tradition and South African light memory, allowing these influences to coexist without hierarchy. In Solar Realism, the focus remains on how structure, surface, and light reveal deeper relationships within the work.
Rather than illustrating heritage directly, the painting allows it to emerge through the interaction of form, material, and context

About Leone
Leone Tonkinson is a South African-born fine artist based in the Netherlands and founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach centred on the presence and character of natural light.
Working primarily in oils, she combines traditional layered painting techniques with close observation, creating still lifes, wildlife and botanical works marked by luminosity, quiet presence and finely observed detail.
Her South African roots and her life within the Dutch landscape both inform her work, bringing together warmth, nature and a strong sense of place. Rather than simply depicting a subject, Tonkinson seeks the moment when light, atmosphere and presence give it emotional resonance.
Her work is held in private collections and exhibited in the Netherlands and internationally.

Exhibitions
Leone Tonkinson has exhibited in both South Africa and Europe, with recent exhibitions in the Netherlands. Her work is held in private collections internationally.
She is the founder of Solar Realism, a painting approach that explores light not simply as illumination, but as an active presence within the subject. Through traditional layered oil-painting techniques, careful observation and controlled natural light, form, atmosphere and emotional presence emerge together.
Her work applies this approach to still life, wildlife and the natural world, where reflected light, transparency, texture and subtle shifts in colour become part of the subject itself.
Education
Formal training in architecture, design, and classical oil
