About "Hydrangeas in Sea Glass"

This work was painted during a period of travel in Spain, where the intensity and clarity of sunlight became a central focus.

I was drawn to the way light moved through the glass vessel, refracting and settling into the surrounding space. The hydrangeas provided a soft counterpoint -- structured yet delicate -- allowing the interaction between light, surface, and transparency to become the primary subject.

The study connects closely to my ongoing interest in South African light, which carries a similar clarity and presence. In this piece, the aim was not to describe the objects themselves, but to observe how light inhabits them -- how it is held within glass, softened across petals, and cast outward into shadow.

In Solar Realism, this relationship between light and structure is essential. The still life becomes a quiet field in which these interactions can be seen more clearly, without distraction.

The work invites a moment of stillness, where light itself becomes the subject.
