About "Beneath the Clarens Sky"
Beneath the Clarens Sky was inspired by the peaceful mountain village of Clarens, where rolling foothills, sandstone peaks and ever-changing skies create one of South Africa's most captivating landscapes. Nestled in the Free State Highlands, Clarens is a place where nature quietly invites visitors to slow down, breathe deeply and rediscover the beauty of stillness.
What drew Ida Lombard to this scene was not only the dramatic mountain landscape, but the feeling of peace held within it. The small farmhouse rests quietly beneath towering clouds, surrounded by open fields and winding streams that have shaped the valley for generations. Although the clouds suggest an approaching storm, warm light continues to sweep across the hills, creating a gentle reminder that hope often arrives in the midst of uncertainty.
Painted with expressive layers of oil paint and visible brushwork, the artwork captures the constantly changing mountain light that makes Clarens so unforgettable. Soft blues, warm earth tones and subtle highlights work together to create depth and atmosphere, while the surrounding mountains provide a quiet sense of shelter and permanence. About Ida
Ida Lombard is a South African contemporary artist whose work explores light, nature, movement and the emotions hidden within a moment. Her distinctive Abstract Realism combines expressive oil painting, acrylics and mixed media to move beyond literal representation and reveal the atmosphere and feeling within her subjects.
Her connection with art began in childhood, influenced by time spent exploring the natural world and early exposure to the discipline of painting. After formal art studies and more than four decades of continued independent practice, Ida has developed a highly expressive visual language characterised by textured surfaces, energetic brushwork, palette-knife marks, expressive drips and layered colour.
Wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, botanical subjects and portraits recur throughout her work, with themes of light, stillness, vulnerability, endurance, hope and transformation. Rather than simply reproducing what she sees, Ida seeks to capture the spirit of a subject--the quiet tension beneath stillness, the movement within a landscape, or the emotional presence of an animal.
Today, Ida works full-time from her Johannesburg studio, creating original paintings for private collectors in South Africa and internationally. Her work is influenced by the expressive energy of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Vladimir Volegov, as well as the storytelling power found in South African wildlife art.
