About "Billowing Sails"

I was struck by the similarities in the clouds and the billowing sails. Both the clouds and the yacht cross vast distances by the wind to unknown destinations with the promise of rain or storms. A tranquil painting I enjoyed doing as it brought a sense of calm to me. The first in a series of "Sails" paintings.

I'm inspired by the play of light - how it reveals emotion in landscapes, figures, and fleeting moments. My work blends realism with symbolism, using layered brushwork, glazes, and mark-making to explore themes of solitude, transformation, and connection. As an artist based in South Africa, I'm inspired by the richness of our landscapes and the complexity of our stories. My goal is to connect - to offer viewers a moment of reflection, recognition, or emotional clarity.

Art, for me, is not decoration -- it's declaration. It's a way of saying: "This mattered. This moved me. This might move you too."
