About "Bobbejaan se Kind (Baboon's child)"

I ‘ve been returning to wildlife as a subject since I was 10 or 12 and to a large extent these where my first artworks. Later as an Adult I found a return to this theme from a different perspect. Wildlife art – specifically African wild life is a popular theme. Many artists doing highly realistic work and this is the style I wanted to explore but from the perspective that the world we live in has become more manipulated and natural environments are more of a exception than a rule.

THE animals I paint are taken ALMOST Exclusivly directly from wildlife photography books. I have personally never experienced in their natural environments which have become more the exclusive holiday experience. For this reason I have chosen to separate the subjects in some way from their natural environment making them more of a decorative element than a true representation of natural law.In some works the boldness of the stylisation makes the animal almost an icon inhabiting its new urban environment.

Recently I was advised be a fellow artist that in order for my work as a whole to be taken seriously I should use a synonym , I found my self trying to justify a body of work that I have been doing for nearly 20years and with that you can make your own judgments.

About Gary

Gary Frier

"I believe that making art is a compulsive act of self expression that can only be realized through the collaborative act of creating and experiencing. Creating art for me is about constantly reflecting on my place in the reality. Using art to express a emotional and intellectual and tactile value, discovering how to distill and interpret my interaction with what surrounds me and documenting that personal relationship.
